Football Terms
General Terms
"Offside" - A position in which an attacking player is closer to the opponent's goal than the ball and the second-to-last defender.
"Corner kick" - A set-piece in which a team kicks the ball from the corner flag into the opponent's penalty area.
"Free kick" - A set-piece in which a team is awarded a direct or indirect free kick for a foul committed by the opposition.
"Penalty kick" - A kick awarded to a team after a foul inside the penalty area; taken from the penalty spot.
"Yellow card" - A cautionary card shown by the referee to a player who has committed a foul.
"Red card" - A card shown by the referee to a player who has committed a serious foul or two yellow card fouls, resulting in being sent off the field.
"Clean sheet" - A game in which a goalkeeper or team has not conceded any goals.
"Hat-trick" - When a player scores three goals in a single game.
"Own goal" - A goal scored when a player accidentally puts the ball in their own team's net.
"Stoppage time" - Additional time added on at the end of each half of a game to compensate for any delays or stoppages.
"Injury time" - Stoppage time added on for injuries
"Counterattack" - A swift attacking move by a team that begins after they have defended against an opponent's attack.
"Formation" - The tactical set-up of a team, including the number and positioning of players.
"Midfield" - The central area of the pitch, between the defensive and attacking thirds.
"Substitution" - The act of replacing one player with another during a game.

Tatical and Position Terms
Pressing" - A defensive tactic in which a team puts pressure on the opposition, particularly when they are in possession of the ball, to force mistakes or regain possession.
"Counter-pressing" - A pressing tactic in which a team immediately presses the opposition after losing possession, to prevent them from building an attack.
"Zonal marking" - A defensive tactic in which each defender is responsible for a specific area of the pitch, rather than marking an individual player.
"Man-to-man marking" - A defensive tactic in which each defender is responsible for marking a specific opposition player.
"High line" - A defensive tactic in which the defensive line plays high up the pitch, to limit the space available to the opposition attackers.
"Low block" - A defensive tactic in which the team defends deep in their own half, inviting the opposition to attack and attempting to hit them on the counter-attack.
"Tiki-taka" - A possession-based playing style in which the team aims to keep the ball and move it quickly through short passes and quick movement.
"Direct play" - A playing style in which the team plays the ball long and quickly, often bypassing midfield, in order to create chances.
"Wing play" - A playing style in which the team attempts to attack down the wings, using the pace and skill of their wide players to create chances.
"False 9" - A tactical system in which a team does not play with a traditional striker, but instead uses a player who drops deep into midfield to create space for attacking players.
"Overlap" - A tactical move in which a full-back moves forward past their winger to provide an additional attacking option and stretch the opposition defence.
"Underlap" - A tactical move in which an attacking player moves inside, creating space for a full-back to move forward and provide an attacking option.
"Counter-attack" - A playing style in which a team defends deep and quickly transitions from defence to attack, often catching the opposition off-guard and creating chances.
"Off the ball movement" - The movement of players without the ball, often used to create space and opportunities for attacking play.
"Diamond midfield" - A tactical system in which a midfield diamond is used, with one defensive midfielder, two central midfielders and one attacking midfielder, to provide a strong defensive base and attacking options.
"Wing-backs" - A tactical system in which the full-backs are given a more attacking role, often playing as wingers and overlapping their midfielders.
"Sweeper-keeper" - A playing style in which the goalkeeper plays as a sweeper, coming off their line to intercept through balls and clear danger.
"False full-back" - A tactical system in which a midfielder is deployed in the full-back position, often to provide more attacking options or to counter the opposition's attacking play.
"Inverted wingers" - A tactical system in which wingers play on the opposite side of their dominant foot, cutting inside to create shooting or passing opportunities.
"Gegenpressing" - A pressing tactic in which a team immediately presses the opposition after losing possession, but with the added emphasis of attempting to win the ball back as high up the pitch as possible.
"Tactical fouls" - Deliberate fouls committed by players to break up the opposition's attacking play or to prevent a counter-attack.
"Trequartista" - A tactical system in which an attacking midfielder plays in a free role, often behind the striker, with the aim of creating chances and scoring goals.
"Regista" - A deep-lying playmaker who is responsible for dictating the tempo of play and controlling the midfield.
"Target man" - A striker who is tall and physically strong, often used to hold up the ball and bring other attacking players into play.
"False 10" - A tactical system in which a forward plays in a central attacking midfield role, dropping deep to create space and opportunities for other attacking players.
